WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL HEAT EXCHANGER?



Let us first determine the optimal heat exchanger:

The superior heat exchanger is the one that provides the required performance, within design limitations at a minimal cost.

The major design limitations are:

Maximal length of a heat exchanger. 

While offering the same heat transfer area, the longer heat exchanger with a smaller shell diameter is less expensive then a shorter one with bigger shell diameter.

Maximal flow velocity. 

The higher velocity of flow results in an improved heat transfer rate and smaller heat transfer area.

Maximal pressure drop.

The higher pressure drop permits a higher velocity of flow.

Size, location and construction of connections.

Your system is unique. To simplify the piping and proper fit to your system, you would prefer to have a heater with connections of your choice.

Price versus quality. 

In general, we will work with and within your limits. While we always optimize a heat exchanger for the lowest price, in some cases we recommend the selection of more expensive materials and design for a higher quality product. 

For instance, stainless steel tubes have superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. When stainless steel tubes are TIG welded to the tubesheet, the joint efficiency equals one.  In many cases, these advantages dictate the usage of more expensive stainless steel tubes. 

Another example is usage of a channel head which is more laborious and costly to produce than a bonnet head. However, a channel head makes it very easy to check and plug leaking tubes without dismounting the piping. A channel head permits the repair of a tube bundle in fuel oil suction heaters without draining the fuel oil from the storage tank.

Optimization of heat exchange through properly matched heat exchangers can greatly enhance operations and waste heat recovery.

Adoption of a reaction turbine
n a reaction turbine, in addition to receiving the impulse of steam ejected from the stationary blades, together with the reaction force of steam ejected from the moving blades, the reaction blade cascade that rotates the rotor has a steam flow velocity that is slower with respect to the impulse blade cascade, and because the flow direction change in the moving blades is small, the efficiency of the turbine is high.

Integral shroud blades


A highly reliable integral machined structure is adopted which includes the shroud section.

Double casing structure

A structure is adopted that can reduce thermal stress and thermal deformation by separating the casing inside and outside.

Low pressure impeller


A free-standing low pressure impeller is adopted which does not use a shroud or lacing wires.

Recover Heat from Boiler Blowdown



Heat can be recovered from boiler blowdown by using a heat exchanger to preheat boiler makeup water. 

Any boiler with continuous blowdown exceeding 5% of the steam rate is a good candidate for the introduction of blowdown waste heat recovery. Larger energy savings occur with high-pressure boilers.

THE BOILER HOUSE – A BASIC OVERVIEW OF A STEAM SYSTEM


The simplest boiler of all time.
The boiler is the heart of the steam system. The typical modern packaged boiler is powered by a burner which sends heat into the boiler tubes.

The hot gases from the burner pass backwards and forwards up to 3 times through a series of tubes to gain the maximum transfer of heat through the tube surfaces to the surrounding boiler water. Once the water reaches saturation temperature (the temperature at which it will boil at that pressure) bubbles of steam are produced, which rise to the water surface and burst. The steam is released into the space above, ready to enter the steam system. The stop or crown Valve isolates the boiler and its steam pressure from the process or plant.

“Solar steam” generator outshines photovoltaic solar cells


Using light-capturing nanoparticles, Rice University researchers have achieved an impressive 82 percent conversion efficiency of sunlight directly into steam; a breakthrough they say will create highly cost-effective solutions for desalination, water purification and electricity generation. Detailing their work in the journal ACS Nano, the researchers say the solar steam method is so effective it can even produce steam from iced water.

Heat exchanger


A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat between a solid object and a fluid, or between two or more fluids. The fluids may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing or they may be in direct contact.[1] They are widely used in space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, power stations, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural-gas processing, and sewage treatment. The classic example of a heat exchanger is found in an internal combustion engine in which a circulating fluid known as engine coolant flows through radiator coils and air flows past the coils, which cools the coolant and heats the incoming air. Another example is the heat sink, which is a passive heat exchanger that transfers the heat generated by an electronic or a mechanical device to a fluid medium, often air or a liquid coolant.

Corrosion in Steam and Condensate Piping


Corrosion in pipes can advance into the interior parts of the metal over time, which may lead to pipe thinning and eventually pipe failure if left untreated. Furthermore, corrosion by-products are often carried downstream in piping, which can contaminate the fluid, cause the erosion and further corrosion of piping, and clog valve orifices.
