“WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?” (JN 1:38)

“From that time on [Judas] kept looking for an opportunity to hand [Jesus] over.” —Matthew 26:16

Judas Iscariot spent some of Holy Week with his eyes fixed on Jesus (Heb 3:1; 12:2). But Judas wasn’t watching Jesus for the purpose of growing as His disciple, though outwardly Judas was an apostle. In fact, Judas was apparently a powerful enough apostle that when Jesus mentioned at the Last Supper that one of the Twelve would betray Him, none of the other eleven disciples thought to accuse Judas of being that betrayer. Instead, they considered themselves more likely to be the betrayer, saying, “Is it I, Lord?” (see Mt 26:22)

What about us? What are we looking for this Holy Week and Triduum? Are we watching the calendar counting down the days for Lent to be over so we can eat chocolate or indulge in other pleasures?  Or are we looking at Jesus to become more like Him in every way? Seek to “remain with Him” while He suffers and dies for our salvation (see Mt 26:38).

Prayer:  Father, is it I? Show me every way in which I turn my back on Your Son.

Promise:  “The Lord God is my Help, therefore I am not disgraced.” —Is 50:7

Praise:  Sister Alice radiates the love of Jesus everywhere she goes. Her love and peacefulness attract many hurting people to the Lord.

NIGHT-LIGHT?

“No sooner had Judas eaten the morsel than he went out. It was night.” —John 13:30

Jesus died during a darkening of the sun (Mk 15:33). Jesus died when midafternoon seemed like midnight. He died because of the night of our sins which the prince of darkness (see Eph 6:12) used to crucify the Light of the world (see Jn 8:12). When we betray, deny, ignore, or disobey Jesus, we turn out our light and enter into the night (Jn 3:19ff). However, when we repent, give ourselves totally to Jesus, and live our Baptisms, we too are the light of the world (Mt 5:14). Even we, who were darkness, are now light in the Lord (Eph 5:8).

In four days, at Easter Vigil, after it is dark, we will enter a dark church led by the light of the Paschal candle. Because this light pierces the darkness of sin, death, and Satan, at Easter Vigil we will proclaim the light of Christ and exult in thanksgiving for Jesus, the Light of life (Jn 8:12). For those in Christ, “the Light shines on in darkness, a darkness that did not overcome it” (Jn 1:5). “The night shall be no more” (Rv 22:5).

Prayer:  Father, may my baptismal light be so bright as to pierce the darkness.

Promise:  “I will make you a light to the nations, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” —Is 49:6

Praise:  In one healing prayer session, Jesus delivered Brenda from years of depression and darkness.

WHOLLY WEAK

Daily Readings & Reflection. 29 Mar 2021.

Monday of Holy Week

The following reflection is from One Bread, One Body courtesy of Presentation Ministries © 2021.

WHOLLY WEAK?

“Be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord.” —Psalm 27:14

If you have a weakness in your faith life, the pivotal events of Holy Week will serve to bring that flaw to the surface. Holy Week is like a refiner’s fire (Mal 3:2-3) that burns away impurities and melts down imperfections. It is a test of our faith, a trial by fire (1 Pt 1:6-7; Sir 2:5).

The critical action in Holy Week is to turn to the Lord for aid, and not turn to anyone else. Judas Iscariot spent Holy Week with Jesus physically, but his heart and mind were elsewhere. Judas spent Holy Week making deals with Jesus’ opponents and “looking for an opportunity to hand [Jesus] over” (Mt 26:16). The other apostles were tried and failed their tests, but they did turn to Jesus and tried their best to persevere.

Jesus knows we are weak; that’s why He gave us His Body and Blood during Holy Week. This Holy Week, fall on your knees before the Lord. Tell Him that you want His will to be done. Remain with Jesus throughout the trials of Holy Week. Will you let Jesus take you through the cross to the resurrection into a new, victorious life in His freedom? “No test has been sent you that does not come to all men. Besides, God keeps His promise. He will not let you be tested beyond your strength. Along with the test He will give you a way out of it so that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor 10:13).

Prayer:  Jesus, I am weak, but You are strong. Keep me near You and near Your cross.

Promise:  “I have grasped you by the hand.” —Is 42:6

Praise:  Keeping a prayer journal prevents Ricardo from forgetting all God has done for him.

Mixed Emotions

Daily Readings & Reflection. 26 Mar 2021.

Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032621.cfm

The following reflection is from One Bread, One Body courtesy of Presentation Ministries © 2021.

MIXED EMOTIONS

“I hear the whisperings of many.” —Jeremiah 20:10

A week from today will be Good Friday. We almost cringe as we think of hearing the reading of Christ’s passion and death. How will we be able to endure venerating the cross by kissing His wounds? We naturally are upset when we recall the death of our older Brother and loving Savior. We are even more disturbed when we realize that, through our sins, we were part of the gang that murdered Him (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598).

At first, the blood Jesus shed horrifies us; but when we consider His sacrifice for us, we begin to rejoice in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal 6:14). The horror of Calvary becomes the joy of Good Friday. What began as the worst day in the history of the human race ended as the greatest day. This was the day of our redemption. So “sing to the Lord, praise the Lord, for He has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!” (Jer 20:13)

Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Prayer:  Father, may the last week of Lent be among the most important weeks of my life.

Promise:  “ ‘John may never have performed a sign,’ they commented, ‘but whatever John said about this Man was true.’ In that place, many came to believe in Him.” —Jn 10:41-42

Praise:  JoAnn meditates on the Passion of Christ every Friday.

A Body Destined to Suffer for Our Salvation

Daily Readings & Reflection. 25 Mar 2021.

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032521.cfm

The following reflection is from One Bread, One Body courtesy of Presentation Ministries © 2021.

“WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS?”

“A body You have prepared for Me.” —Hebrews 10:5

The body of Jesus Christ became incarnate in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She conceived by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Mary’s fully human nature was freely joined to the Holy Spirit’s divine nature. Thus the body of the Infant Jesus was perfectly formed and prepared for redeeming and saving fallen humanity.

In the Mass, we celebrate the marriage of the Holy Spirit and Mary, as well as the Fruit of her womb, Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus’ Body was prepared by the Spirit for Him — but also was prepared for our benefit, redemption, and salvation.

God gave up His Son out of love for the world (Jn 3:16). Mary offered her body and her Son for our redemption. Jesus offered His Body for our salvation and healing. To be sure we don’t miss the point, Jesus said and continues to say through the priest at every Mass: “This is My Body, to be given up for you” (see 1 Cor 11:24). Therefore, respond by telling Him, “This is my body, to be given up for You.” On this feast of the Annunciation, offer your body to God as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1).

Prayer:  Father, I am all Yours. May I glorify You in my body (1 Cor 6:20).

Promise:  “Great will be His dignity and He will be called Son of the Most High.” —Lk 1:32

Praise:  The Archangel Gabriel foretold the birth of John the Baptist (Lk 1:13). Then he made the greatest announcement of all time to Mary: You will be the mother of God (see Lk 1:31-33).

Joy, Peace, and Freedom in Life

Daily Readings & Reflection. 24 Mar 2021.

Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032421.cfm

The following reflection is courtesy of Don Schwager © 2021. Don’s website is located at Dailyscripture.net

Do you know the joy, peace, and freedom which God offers to those who trust in him and obey his word? God sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to bring us God’s kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Jesus came to rescue us from our sinful pride and slavery to sin. He came to rescue us from Satan’s snares and the clutches of hell, and to free us from the world’s temptation to empty glory and lust for greed and power. Only Jesus can truly set us free and reconcile us with God – every other way falls short of God’s plan to save and deliver us from death, corruption, and sin.

Why did the religious authorities reject Jesus’s offer of freedom, forgiveness, and new life in the kingdom of God? Despite Jesus’ numerous signs and miracles, the Jewish authorities could not accept his claim to speak and act in the name of his heavenly Father. They were blinded by their misguided ideas of how the Messiah would restore Israel and rule the earth. And Jesus revealed to them how Satan had led them into temptation – both to reject him as the Messiah and to thwart his claim by killing him.

Jesus met their opposition and hostility with courage and determination to do his Father’s will. He willingly embraced the cross in order to destroy the works of Satan and to save both Jews and Gentiles through his atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world. Jesus shows us the way to the kingdom of God – through faith and obedience to God’s word and will for our lives. To be a follower and disciple of the Lord Jesus requires faith and obedience – they are two sides of the same coin. The word disciple literally means one who learns from the Master and who listens to the voice of the Teacher. And the word for obedience literally means to listen under and be subordinate to the one who has rightful authority to teach and command what is just and true.

The free gift of faith

How can we grow in faith and discipleship – by faithfully following the Lord and obeying his word. Faith is a free supernatural gift of God. It is more than just a belief in the truths of God. It is first and foremost a personal relationship of trust and obedience to the Lord and his word. The Lord is worthy of our complete trust and wholehearted devotion because he is utterly reliable, just and true, and he is faithful to his word. That is why we can entrust our lives to him and submit to him without reservation.

God does not leave us in the dark or remain distant and silent. He reveals himself to all who earnestly seek him and hunger for his truth. God, in fact, first seeks us out and draws us to himself. We could not find him if he did not first seek to reveal himself to us. That is why we need to respond to God’s gracious gift of invitation with an open and receptive heart that wants to listen, learn, and receive what God wishes to give us. Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) said, “I believe, in order to understand – and I understand, the better to believe” (Sermon 43:7,9).

The test of faith

In the Old Testament Book of Daniel we see a remarkable example of faith being put to the test in the midst of trial and adversity. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the three young companions of Daniel, were commanded by the king of Persia to bow down and submit to the pagan idols of his nation, they unhesitatingly said, “We will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up” (Daniel 3:18). They knew God’s command, “Do not worship false idols”(Exodus 20:3-6; Deuteronomy 12:29-31). They decided it was far better to obey God and entrust their lives to him rather than give in to the threats of others. God gave them courage to take a bold stand for their faith. They willingly accepted the King’s punishment as they were bound and thrown into a burning fiery furnace.

Daniel tells us how God was very present to these three young men as they proclaimed their faith in him. God showed his presence to the three men and walked with them in the fiery furnace. As a remarkable sign of God’s power to the pagan rulers of Persia, God kept the three men from harm and delivered them from death (Daniel 3:25,28). Do you trust in God to give you his help and strength when your faith is put to the test?

True and false sources of identity

The scribes and Pharisees, who were the religious authorities of the Jews, questioned Jesus’ authority to speak and act in God’s name. They questioned Jesus’ claim to forgive sins and to set people free from slavery to sin. They understood that only God had power to forgive sins and to release people from their burden of guilt and shame. They refused to accept that Jesus’ authority was given to him by his Father in heaven. Jesus tells them that they think evil of him and desire to kill him because they are under the influence and power of the “father of lies” who is opposed to the one true Father and Creator who made us in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27).

Jesus explains that he is speaking of two different senses of “fatherhood”. The first is a physical identity through natural fatherhood. And the second and more significant identity is a self-chosen one that is the result of being led and formed in a moral way of thinking and living one’s life that has been shaped through the example, words, and influence of someone we are consciously or unconsciously following and imitating.

We do not grow or learn in a vacuum. We are shaped for better or for worse by those we choose to imitate and follow. Sin leads us away from God’s truth and the help he gives us to follow him. Slavery to sin is ultimately rooted in the father of lies (John 8:44), whom Scripture calls the devil (Luke 4:1) and Satan (Luke 10:18), the ruler of this present world who is opposed to God (John 12:31; 2 Corinthians 4:4).

True freedom comes from God

The freedom which Jesus offers his followers is freedom from the power of sin, Satan, and the worldly influence of those who oppose God and his ways. We are powerless to set ourselves free from bondage to Satan, sin, and death (Romans 3:23; 5:6). That is why the Lord Jesus took our sins upon himself and nailed them to the cross (1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:5-6; Colossians 2:14). His death on the cross has won victory and pardon for us, and peace with God. Through Jesus’ sacrifice we are not only forgiven and reconciled with God – we become the adopted sons and daughters of God (Romans 8:14-16). We can call God our Father because the Lord Jesus has reconciled us and redeemed us from slavery to sin and Satan.

A redeemed slave is not entirely free until all of his chains and weights have been broken and destroyed. The Lord Jesus alone has the power to release us from every chain and burden that would keep us in bondage to sinful habits and hurtful desires. Are there any chains – any sinful patterns, harmful attitudes, and addictive behavior – that you need to be released from? Allow the Lord Jesus to unbind you and bring you healing, pardon, and freedom to walk in his way of love and truth. The Lord Jesus sets us free from slavery to our own selfishness and sinful desires in order to set us free for a joy-filled life of love and service for his kingdom. Paul the Apostle reminds us that Christ has won freedom for each one of us – not to serve ourselves or do as we please – but rather to please the Lord and to serve our neighbors in love for their sake (Galatians 5:1,13). Do you accept and believe Christ’s word of truth, love, and freedom for your life?

“Lord Jesus, write your words of love and truth upon my heart and make me a diligent student and a worthy disciple of your word.”

Your Personal Trading Investment on a US$ 5.5 Trillion Dollar Transactions Per Day Industry

I have lived the gutter and ran the rat race only to learn later in life that creating much needed financial leverage is not that hard. The way to work for big money without spilling your brain, tearing your muscle tissues, burning the midnight oil, or snuffing the life out of you from so much stress is to learn how to properly trade foreign currencies.

Trading currency online is the easiest, fastest, and biggest way to realize an ROI for every investment made. Not a get-rich-quick-scheme though. Anyone who tells you of being a millionaire just by sitting around and doing nothing is a scammer. A liar. A con artist out to get your money.

You have to want to learn it. Be familiar with how the market behaves. It is not for the soft-hearted and impatient lot. Passion to unlock the mystery of a living entity that has a life of its own and lurking off-the-shelf of every stock market in the world- NYSE, London, Sydney, Tokyo, etc on a 24 hour 5 days a week continuous trading.

To think of it, we have studied from primary to secondary schools, eventually to college or university just to earn measly sum of money on a regular basis on employment after we graduated. It would take us a lifetime chance though to create a breakthrough. That is if we become lucky enough to rise up the corporate ladder to become a GM or a CEO. Maybe labor hard and risk huge amount of money to build a business that can shortcut our financial development. The sad truth is all would not be as lucky coz it is a cut-throat competition. Most would die continually chasing a dream.

There is a way.

You don’t have to be recruited. You don’t need to build a network. Not even sell. You don’t give your money to a conman to be stolen. Nobody can do it for you. You have to do it yourself. Study and learn the tight ropes. Be an expert on market and technical analysis.

Beware on just following trade signals from other Forex Trader without really understanding what you do. Initially enticing you to earn big time. They do that to earn commission money on every trade you do by eventually having your forex trading account attached to their own account. You will only be good as long as they are around- a parasitic forex trading life. It’s not just all about the money following any trading signals from other traders. It is all about YOU having the trading skills for life.

What you will be needing is willingness to learn, develop habits, practice proper attitude, and apply trading discipline. It will definitely take some time as all good endeavors in life are, lots of patience, and depending on your capacity and passion to learn it, will make you realize- were years better in giving you a financially savvy future than all your elementary, high school, and college years combined!

Trading currency online is the easiest and fastest way to create financial leverage.

FOREX market is the largest financial markets of the world with about $4-$5 trillion (still rising as you read this) currency exchanges and transactions everyday, it is expected to have big volume of transaction every day (24hrs/5day) which result to higher liquidity. And the higher liquidity the higher the demand and more opportunity to buy, sell and trade.

There is no limit. No competition. No boundaries. It is global. You can do it everywhere in the world where there is internet. You can trade online and link your personal bank savings or current account with your international forex trading broker, deposit or withdraw money seamlessly in USD or Philippine Peso. Truly a global and universal personal investment thing you can do.

What can be a greater financial endeavor than that?

Truly that is way above employment and building other people’s dream. Build your own dream. Way above a local business affected by economic downturn. You can profit on Forex Trading whether the global market goes up or goes down- you monitor foreign currency pairs rise or fall and you create profit if you predict it right using various available fundamental and technical analysis tools and sites online.

But first thing first, you have to want to learn it direly to become successful. Coupled with passion and patience, you’ll get there.

Have You Committed Adultery?

Daily Readings & Reflection. 21 Mar 2021.

Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Reflection 1

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So, what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again, he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So, he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”

Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe in you though I often forget to exercise my faith. I trust in you, though I often lose my peace over little matters. I love you, though I miss so many opportunities to exercise my love throughout the day because I get wrapped up in myself. I am so grateful to realize that you smile on me in my weakness and misery and only desire the good for me in return.

Petition: Lord, help me to be faithful in my marriage.

1. “They Have No Wine”: The words of the Blessed Mother—”they have no wine” (see John 2:3)—have a relevance that is as permanent as it is poignant. The wedding feast ran out of wine for the same reasons as many marriages do: lack of awareness, a failure to anticipate needs, taking things for granted. Few events manifest the “lack of wine” more profoundly than adultery. We cannot know all the circumstances surrounding the act of adultery of the woman in today’s Gospel reading. Perhaps she was “more sinned against than sinning.” But whatever emotional pain, neglect or temptation brought her down, Jesus’ formula is simple: “Go and from now on do not sin anymore.” Easier said than done for a marriage now beyond repair? Jesus isn’t just a therapist. He is God. Remember that he turned water into wine.

2. The Blessing of Accountability: The woman probably felt dead already, filled with terror as she was led through the streets to the taunts and whistling of bystanders. We feel compassion for her, precisely because we know that we, too, are sinners. Jesus’ mercy towards her inspires us, because love stirs our hearts at a far deeper level than fear. But we also know that, as disagreeably self-righteous as those elders were, getting caught was a good thing for the woman. Through it, she was able to experience the mercy of Christ and have another chance. Marriages don’t thrive when there are dark corners and hidden places that are off-limits to one’s spouse. Accountability and transparency, on the other hand, continually engender that most precious of marital virtues: trust. The daily and consistent effort to be accountable, to embrace “mutual submission” (Cf. Ephesians 5:21), and constantly to make “trust deposits” in the love bank account are the best insurance against marital shipwreck.

3. Second Chances: “Go and from now on do not sin anymore”: words both stirring and challenging. What happened after that? That’s a complicated question because second chances in marriage involve two people. Having received a vocation to become “one flesh,” both spouses need to embrace the need to accept God’s grace, accept responsibility, forgive, and work together to overcome whatever wound has been inflicted on their relationship. This mutual work can only begin with oneself. That’s why Jesus says, “Do not sin anymore.” In fact, changing one’s own heart, centering it on God and then striving to be the best husband or wife one can be, is frequently the best way to stir things up positively for the relationship as a whole. Jesus is all about second chances. When two people stand before the altar to pledge their love, it is indissoluble. But that’s not only about the bond between them. It’s also the bond between them and Christ. “Do whatever he tells you!”

Conversation with Christ: Lord, you know how many tests and temptations we are subject to. Give us strength! Don’t allow the corrosive effects of time to wear down our relationships. Help us to be faithful to each other and to you.

Resolution: I will make a special spiritual sacrifice today for my marriage (or for the faithfulness of married couples if I am unmarried).

Reflection 2

The following reflection is courtesy of Don Schwager © 2021. Don’s website is located at Dailyscripture.net

When accusations are brought against you, how do you respond and where do you turn for help? The Book of Daniel tells the story of Susanna, a godly woman who loved God and his word. She was unjustly accused of adultery by two elder judges who had tried to seduce her. Since adultery was a serious offense punishable by stoning to death, the law of Moses required at least two witnesses, rather than one, to convict a person. Susanna knew she had no hope of clearing her good reputation and escaping death apart from God’s merciful intervention. Daniel tells us that she looked up to heaven and cried out to the Lord for his help (Daniel 13:35). The two elders who wanted to sin with her had done just the opposite – they hid themselves from God’s sight and they kept their secret sin hidden from the people as well. They brought false charges against her in revenge for her refusal to sin with them. God in his mercy heard the plea of Susanna and he punished the two elders for giving false witness.

Unjust accusations against Jesus

The Gospel accounts frequently describe how Jesus had to face unjust accusations made by the Pharisees, the ruling elders of Israel. They were upset with Jesus’ teaching and they wanted to discredit him in any way they could. They wanted to not only silence him, but to get rid of him because of his claim to speak with God’s authority. When a moral dilemma or difficult legal question arose, it was typical for the Jews to take the matter to a rabbi for a decision. The scribes and the Pharisees brought to Jesus a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. John writes that they wanted to “test” Jesus on the issue of retribution so ” they might have some charge to bring against him” (John 8:6).

Jewish law treated adultery as a serious crime since it violated God’s ordinance and wreaked havoc on the stability of marriage and family life. It was one of the three gravest sins punishable by death. If Jesus said the woman must be pardoned, he would be accused of breaking the law of Moses. If he said the woman must be stoned, he would lose his reputation for being the merciful friend of sinners.

Jesus then does something quite unexpected – he begins to write in the sand. The word for “writing” which is used here in the Gospel text has a literal meaning “to write down a record against someone” (for another example see Job 13:26). Perhaps Jesus was writing down a list of the sins of the accusers standing before him. Jesus now turns the challenge towards his accusers. In effect he says: Go ahead and stone her! But let the man who is without sin be the first to cast a stone. The Lord leaves the matter to their own consciences.

Pardon, restoration, and new life

When the adulterous woman is left alone with Jesus, he both expresses mercy and he strongly exhorts her to not sin again. The scribes wished to condemn, Jesus wished to forgive and to restore the sinner to health. His challenge involved a choice – either to go back to her former way of sin and death or to reach out to God’s offer of forgiveness, restoration, and new life in his kingdom of peace and righteousness. Jesus gave her pardon and a new start on life. God’s grace enables us to confront our sin for what it is – unfaithfulness to God, and to turn back to God with a repentant heart and a thankful spirit for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Do you know the joy of repentance and a clean conscience?

“God our Father, we find it difficult to come to you, because our knowledge of you is imperfect. In our ignorance we have imagined you to be our enemy; we have wrongly thought that you take pleasure in punishing our sins; and we have foolishly conceived you to be a tyrant over human life. But since Jesus came among us, he has shown that you are loving, that you are on our side against all that stunts life, and that our resentment against you was groundless. So we come to you, asking you to forgive our past ignorance, and wanting to know more and more of you and your forgiving love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Prayer of Saint Augustine) ”

“THE AVENGER OF BLOOD” (NM 35:12)

“Let me witness the vengeance You take on them.” —Jeremiah 11:20

The people to whom Jeremiah prophesied were treacherously planning to kill him (Jer 11:19). Jeremiah risked his neck to serve God, and he wanted God to back him up by taking vengeance on these enemies. In addition, Jeremiah wanted to see it personally.

We Christians have enemies also. Unlike Jeremiah, we do get to witness the vengance God takes on them. We see:

• Jesus destroying the devil’s works (1 Jn 3:8),

• the pride of the powerful crushed as they gaze upon Jesus crucified (see Is 52:15),

• sinners emerging from the confessional with tears of repentance and gratitude as Jesus in His vengeance robs Satan of still more of his former captives (Col 2:15).

God commands in His Word: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves; leave that to [Me]…‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay’ ” (Rm 12:19). Yet we can have a role. God’s Word tells us: “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon his head” (Rm 12:20).

God is perfectly just (1 Cor 1:30; Is 30:18). He is able to punish the wicked until they are forced to choose for Him or against Him (2 Pt 2:9). He can avenge by acting in justice or avenge through mercy. Let’s do our part as God’s agents so His enemies and ours receive the right kind of vengeance from God (Rm 12:20).

Prayer:  Father, may the burning coals of kindness I pour on my enemies melt their hearts and lead them to You.

Promise:  “No man ever spoke like that before.” —Jn 7:46

Praise:  In prayer, Jan made a distinct decision to be kind to a cantankerous neighbor and saw that woman grow in love in response to her kindness.

To Whom Do You Entrust Your Life?

Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary

What can hold us back from doing the will of God? Fear, especially the fear of death and the fear of losing the approval of others, can easily rob us of courage and the will to do what we know is right. Jesus met opposition and the threat of death with grace and determination to accomplish his Father’s will. Jesus knew that his mission, his purpose in life, would entail sacrifice and suffering and culminate with death on the cross. But that would not be the end. His “hour” would crush defeat with victory over sin and Satan, condemnation with pardon and freedom, and death with glory and everlasting life.

Jesus offered up his life for us to restore us to friendship with God

He willingly suffered for our sake and embraced the cross to redeem us from sin and to restore us to new life and friendship with God our Father.

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) wrote:

“Our Lord had the power to lay down his life and to take it up again. But we cannot choose how long we shall live, and death comes to us even against our will. Christ, by dying, has already overcome death. Our freedom from death comes only through his death. To save us Christ had no need of us. Yet without him we can do nothing. He gave himself to us as the vine to the branches; apart from him we cannot live.”

No one can be indifferent with Jesus for very long. What he said and did – his miraculous signs and wonders – he did in the name of God. Jesus not only claimed to be the Messiah, God’s Anointed One – he claimed to be in a unique relationship of sonship with God the Father and to know him as no one else did. To the Jews this was utter blasphemy. The religious authorities did all they could to put a stop to Jesus because they could not accept his claims and the demands he made.

Jesus alone can set us free from the power of sinful pride, rebellion, and fear

We cannot be indifferent to the claims which Jesus makes on us. We are either for him or against him. There is no middle ground. We can try to mold the Lord Jesus to our own ideas and way of thinking or we can allow his word of truth to free us from our own sinful blindness, stubborn pride, and ignorance. Do you accept all that Jesus has taught and done for you with faith and reverence or with disbelief and contempt? The consequences are enormous, both in this life and in eternity.

“Eternal God, who are the light of the minds that know you, the joy of the hearts that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you; grant us so to know you, that we may truly love you, and so to love you that we may fully serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom, in Jesus Christ our Lord.”
