All business owners start out with a dream of being successful. We all had a vision of more financial security; the freedom to work less hours, spending more time on holiday, or with the family; or even just more time to ourselves.
It’s more than possible that you have read this excellent book; and maybe Michael Gerber’s ‘e-myth;’ Tony Hsieh’s ‘Delivering Happiness; or even Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think and Grow Rich’.
But very soon, the reality becomes the freedom to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week, spending less time with the family and finding holidays are a rare treat!
What I’ve noticed is that the ‘playing not to los-ers’ have often read all the books but aren’t doing any of the ‘stuff’. They certainly plan to; when they are bigger, have more money, have more staff, when it’s not just them doing it all, after this next project, next year – sometime soon. Oh yes, definitely!
So what makes the difference between those who do ‘make it’ in a tough economy versus those who seem to struggle; making a reasonable living but, in reality, they are only just getting by?

Today, people are busier than ever. They have little time to do anything well – including the vital process of thinking things through. For many people, clear thinking is an increasingly rare commodity. People don’t always get around to the necessary steps of thoughtfully weighing their options, building expertise and reaching their own reasoned conclusions to solve problems and make decisions. Hubris is “exaggerated pride or self-confidence.” It inflates the ego and, thus, diminishes and eventually destroys moral character. Hubris pushes leaders to seek power and amass it for self-aggrandizement, not for the good of the people they lead or for the benefit of their organizations.

With leadership comes power. This breeds hubris, a malignant vice for leaders. It’s corruptive and compromising; it strikes at a leader’s integrity and effectiveness. It provokes leaders to abuse their power. Hubris ruins leaders and damages the people they lead.
But because of leaders’ exalted position, the threat of insidious hubris comes with the territory. Hubris leads to rigidity, incompetency and complacency, plus a tendency to intimidate others and a lack of gratitude. Hubris turns otherwise good individuals into jerks, raging narcissists and all-around horrible people. Eventually, hubris robs leaders of their moral foundations.
With so many new technologies at our disposal, beginning with the outcome we desire, then reverse engineering the milestones needed to achieve that outcome, has become easier than ever before.
