Farm-Based BioDiesel Manufacturing

Transesterification (alcoholysis) of vegetable oils means to replace the heavy glycerol for a lighter alcohol. It then results in FATTY ACID ALCOHOL ESTERS, (commonly known as “BIODIESEL”), and crude GLYCEROL.

The BD2 reactor is a single stainless steel vessel, pressurized, electrically heated and isolated batch unit, capable of either base, or base/base processes for transesterifying any vegetable oil, virgin or wasted one, with up to 7% acidity.

The vessel processes 63.5 gallon (240 liters) of vegetable oil/alcohol mix, delivering on average 53 gallon (200 liters) of Biodiesel and 10.5 gallon (40 liters) of glycerol, per batch, in approximately 11 hours.

The plant is skid mounted, self-contained, and can be powered by either 380V/50hz or 480 V/60hz; other voltages are available.

Oilless compressed air (10 psi) is provided by an innovative SA-T pendular oilless compressor.

Vegetable oil and alcohol are pumped through ball valves and visual level. The alkaline catalyst is pre-measured and then added to the alcohol. Proportions can be modified by the operator to fit different feedstocks. The strong and fast mixing is performed by one on-line mixer and two pumps.

Operator pre-set  temperature and pressure values are kept automatically. Instruments, lights, fail-safe visual and sound alarms are incorporated into the control panel.

A pressure relief valve and a vent manifold allow outside venting to a service line, complying with both ambient and work safety requirements.

Metal bodied, spherical valves, are used throughout.

The minimum M4 module includes one BD2-D flash dryer and one BD2 processor.

The dryer has identical body, assembly and size than the reactor, but includes one venturi type vacuum pump on top.

The previously well settled, cleaned and filtered oil, is pumped into the dryer, which heats and dehydrate it by boiling the bonded water at relative low temperature under limited vacuum.

At the BD2 processor, the alcohol is pumped into the vessel and the mixing starts with the vent valve opened. The catalyst is first pre-measured by titration of the feedstock, and then poured into the vessel to mix.

The hot vegetable oil is then pumped from the BD2-D dryer into the reactor; the reactor’s pipe heaters (belt type) turned on, and finally the vent valve closed.

The mixing continues under selected conditions of temperature and pressure during a stated period. Once finished, the mixture settles under pressure, until the separation of the glycerol and the liquid alcoholester occurs.

The resulting glycerol is first extracted applying air pressure, and the remaining Biodiesel is pushed through a 5 microns filter before being stored.

* Total period process is around 11 h, then 2 batches per day can be done in the BD2 reactor

* More production can be reached by adding external pressurized settling tanks

-The methylester produced can reach the ASTM and EN 14214 standards.

1. General Description

To assure the complete extraction of the remaining free glycerol particles (in case of short time settling), the biodiesel is forced through a rotating (6-7000 rpm) ejector.

This process separates from the liquid any particle over 0.5 micron size. Please note that the commercial cellulose fuel filters are designed to keep 15-20 micron particles.

NOTE: this filter also keeps off the sterol-glucoside particles(waxes core)

2. Main Process steps

• charge of 200 L of hot methylester from the settling tank

• open the “filter” valve

• turn ON the high pressure pump up to reach 5-6 bar in the manometer. Regulate the flow to 10 L/min.

• keep circulation during 20 minutes

• open the “extraction” valve to send the filtered liquid to the storage tank

** all the particles will be kept into the cover of the filter, which is cleaned by hand

“dry washing”  the methylester

● charge 200 L of hot methylester from the settling tank

● add 1-2% of powder Magnesol type

● open the “circulation” valve and turn ON the  pump for mixing

● keep circulation during 20 minutes. Turn OFF the pump and close “circulation” valve

● Attach and EXTERNAL gross filtering device for 15-25 microns

● Open the “extraction” valve and turn ON the pressure pump to start the cleaning process. The output of the external filter should be connected to the inlet of the vessel to perform the  0.5 micron filtering under pressure (item 2.)

BD4-MG module to produce METHANOL from the crude GLYCEROL

BD4-MG module to produce METHANOL from the crude GLYCEROL

1. Main process description

The raw glycerol from the transesterification reaction of oils is treated with pure hydrogen in order to get these products:

– dry methanol, 90-95% purity

– free fatty acids

– polyglycols

** The % of each product depends on the composition of the glycerol feedstock

** FFA’s and Methanol can be re-used in the same biodiesel manufacturing, and the polyglycols may be sold to the chemical industry, or burnt as fuel .

2. Steps of the process

• load of 500 L (125 gal) of raw glycerol, weight around 600 kg (1200 lb)

• acid neutralization

• FFA’s extraction (+/- 25%), keeping the 80% purified glycerin

• hidrogenolysis of the glycerin under controlled temperature and vacuum

• extraction of the gaseous methanol and water cooled condensing (+/- 40%)

• extraction of the glycols (+/- 35%)

3. Production capacity

The BD4-MG module can process up to 1000 kg (2000 lb) of raw glycerol along of 24 h work.

Affordable Stainless Steel Machinery for Manufacturing BIODIESEL Fuel

– Get the best base reaction yield (98-99%) with our high temperature protocol, which

saves catalizer, methanol and reaction time (reducing the main cost)

– In one single step, it will process any oil or liquid yellow grease with up to 6% FFA

– Washing this biodiesel made from virgin oils is not mandatory. No polluting by-products!

– Liquid lye catalyzer may also be used (in this case, use our sawdust dry washing).

The smallest & lightweight  M4 module makes and gravity settles 2 x 200L (2x50gal) of biodiesel per day. It is composed of the following:

1 (one) BD2-D, vacuum flash dryer for full dewatering 100-200 L/h of  veggie oil

1 (one) BD2 pressurized processor, performing the 240 liter batch reaction

1 (one) SAT-1, oil less, air compressor for safety handling the liquids

Designed to be installed in full ventilated rooms, all the biodiesel processors are industrial grade, stainless steel made, with on-line mixer, double pump feeding, belt type electric heaters in pipes, and 3 safety devices.

The optional BD2F vessel is a 0.5 micron filter to keep out the sterol glucosides particles, and delivers the best bio diesel for low temperature use.

The resulting biodiesel can meet ASTM or EN standards (depends on the feedstock used).

Main Benefits:

> driven by one single non-skilled personnel.

> reduced energy consumption: 60 Wh/liter, including the oil dewatering

> liquid lye can be used as catalizer (sawdust dry “washing” must be used in this case)

> gravity settling means no maintenance needed: it exists two mobile parts only

Easy and fast biodiesel quality control by two physical parameters and 2 tests:

* Specific Gravity at 20°C < 0.895 g/cm3

* Kinematic Viscosity at 40°C < 5.5 cSt

* PH > 7 measure, and the “27/3” chemical test

Expandable from 400 to 6000 L/day (1500 gal/day):

Each module can make 15 reactions in 24h. Then, by sending the mixture to external settling tanks (BD2-E type) the vessel becomes free to handle successive reactions. This way, one M40 module may settles up to 6,000 liters/day(1500 gal/day) of high quality biodiesel.

** NOTE: the 8-9h gravity settling time into the pressurized decanters defines the daily production. Each batch reaction, from the oil drying up to the reaction end, takes 60-90 minutes only.

There are available bigger M8/16/24/32/40 modules with the new BD4 reactor with one 400 L/batch BD4 type processor, the M40 module offers a production of 6000 L of biodiesel in 24h (over 1800 T/year) by adding several BD4-E settling tanks.

Manpower Requirements: two operators.

Modular arrangement: several M40 units can be placed in parallel to increase the production. Any of them may simultaneously process a different feedstock each to make high quality biodiesel.

Our supply comes with BD JET Manual, detailing the technology and instructions for easy DIY installation.

To comply with quality control, the scope includes instruments for Specific Gravity & Viscosity measurements.

As an option, we can include the new BD2-F device, for 0.5 micron centrifugal filtering, which will remove any sterol glucosyde particle from the biodiesel.

7.5 HP, three phase electric Motor + 1.1kw heaters.

Some additional explanations

Highly experienced mill operator can extract oil without cooking from rape seeds, cottonseed, sesame, sunflower, copra etc. For Groundnut, Palm kernel, Castor seed, cooking is essential.

Refining of oil is not required. Filtered oil is best for health. Filter oil has minimum 18 months shelf life. However, cottonseed oil requires refining or at least neutralization.

Castor seed oil requires steam heating in a neutralizer vessel before filtration.

For palm fruits, our conventional expeller will not be useful. SPECIAL KIND OF EXPELLER WITH DIFFERENT DESIGN IS PROVIDED FOR PALM FRUITS and such expeller specifically for palm fruits is not useful for any other oilseeds.

Function of Machinery

Cracker breaks the sunflower/castor/copra/groundnut  seeds and gives the mixture of kernels & husks for crushing. Runs on 4 H.P. Motor. (Not included).

Cooking kettle heats and cooks the kernels or oilseeds by electricity. A little spray water is also added to the oilseeds to increase moisture content to optimum level. Kettle is mounted on the expeller and is driven from expeller motor.

Expeller crushes oilseeds producing oil and oil cake.

Filtered oil is completely pure and fresh natural edible oil.

Neutralizer (optional) removes free fatty acids from cottonseed oil by adding caustic soda (lye). It is driven by 1 H.P. Motor. Castor oil also can be heated into neutralizer by steam coils inside the neutralizer.

Socio-economic Benefits

Oil Mills greatly encourage rural development as wealth and self-employment jobs are generated in villages.

Oil Mills save transport expenses for carrying oilseeds to cities and bringing oil from cities.

Consumers empty tins can be refilled and hence costly packing expenses can be saved.

Oil Mills make pure, fresh natural oil available to villagers from their own oilseeds on custom milling basis. So villagers are saved from profiteering, adulteration, taxations etc.

Speculation in oil and oilseed becomes impossible due to decentralised production in Tiny Oil Mills

Oil Mills eliminate exploitation by middlemen and traders, as consumers have direct contact with mills.

Oil Mills encourage animal husbandry by making oilcake available as cattlefeed. It increases milk production considerably

Oil Mills create confidence and enthusiasm among villagers and their youngsters to run and manage rural industries. This is the greatest benefit as it accelerates creative entrepreneurship for other industries also.
