Roosevelt was what we might call a “lifetime learner.” Learning became, for him, a mode of personal enjoyment and a path to professional success. It’s a habit many of us would like to emulate. The Economist recently argued that with all the disruptions in the modern economy, particularly technology, ongoing skill acquisition is critical to persistent professional relevance. Formal education levels are regularly linked to higher earnings and lower unemployment. And apart from its utility, learning is fun. It’s a joy to engage a new topic. Having an array of interesting topics at your disposal when speaking to colleagues or friends can boost your confidence. And it’s fulfilling to finally understand a difficult new subject.

But this type of continuous and persistent learning isn’t merely a decision. It must become a habit. And as such, it requires careful cultivation.

As a young entrepreneur, Michael Acton Smith had big ideas for his business.

Communicating that vision to investors was the challenge for Smith, the co-founder and co-CEO of mindfulness and meditation app Calm. The app launched in 2012, and finally found significant traction after being named Apple’s App of the Year in 2017. Now, it’s valued at more than $1 billion. Looking back, Smith says, being able to tell a great story about your brand’s future is a crucial part of selling your idea. It’s equally important, he adds, to constantly take small, actionable steps toward realizing that future.

“You do need that wild vision,” says Smith. “But you also need to get out of bed, roll your sleeves, and do that critical execution work every single day to get to each step of many steps on the journey.”

These “spillover events” are becoming increasingly common as humans encroach further into the natural world and have originated some of the worst outbreaks in recent memory, including SARS, Ebola, HIV and likely the new coronavirus too.

When you come across a deceiving image, it’s just impossible not to wonder how the illusion works. And consequently, one part of your conscious mind tries to straighten up that deformed image. This is exactly the case for this latest optical illusion image created by Victoria Skye. Her own version of the famous optical illusion, the Cafe wall illusion by Richard Gregory, became an online viral sensation simply for its mesmerizing and deceiving patterns. Previous versions of the cafe wall illusion that dates back to 1898 have also been discovered but Skye’s modern take on this vintage optical illusion is one to behold.

His company’s micro-investing app — which costs $1, $2 or $3 per month, depending on your financial goals — helps users invest extra money in exchange-traded funds by rounding up purchases to the nearest dollar and then automatically investing that spare change. It’s available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The Navy’s New Radar May Turn The Tables On China’s Anti-Ship Missile Strategy

There are many attack scenarios wherein anti-ship missiles, aircraft and even ballistic missiles can be fired by enemies in a coordinated fashion, requiring defensive technologies to detect and discriminate multiple threats at one time.

The new radars are much more sensitive, longer range, and engineered to discriminate threats from one another. The current SPY-6 integration initiative, now underway at a rapid pace, is changing Navy surface warfare tactics, according to The Navy’s Above Water Sensors Program Manager, Capt. Jason Hall.

Deepak Chopra is an alternative medicine doctor and self-help advocate whose advice sounds profound but, upon closer examination, turns out to be verbose gibberish.

Some scholars claim that the Gospel of Thomas is a first-century work and so it is the most reliable of the bunch. But other scholars, including critical ones like Bart Ehrman, believe that the Gospel’s allusions to other books of the New Testament, its reliance on later Syriac renderings of those texts, and its absence of apocalyptic themes place its composition in the middle of the second century. This alone would make it far less reliable than the first-century canonical Gospels. And that leaves the Guru Jesus theory without any historical basis whatsoever.
