“Mentorship plays a pivotal role in anyone’s career. A good opportunity can open a door for you, but mentorship will show you how to cross the room. That’s why they say, early in your career don’t choose a job, choose a boss”

Game of Thrones characters in modern business

If you told Jon Snow how to run a business, he would probably set ghost on you, mistaking you for a White Walker. In the world of Westeros, technology is so far off the radar; it might not be invented for a thousand more years.

And yet, some principles apply regardless of the characteristics in this fictional world. Game of Thrones has garnered critical praise and become the world’s most popular television show not because of how far removed it is from today’s environment, but how many of its principles can be applied to our modern world.

Don’t Tell Me Your People Are Your Most Valuable Asset

With very few exceptions, there is no asset more valuable than your customer list, and specifically their purchase history & contact info.

As the great Peter Drucker said, “Without a customer, there is no business.”

You all know that one of my core beliefs and teachings is that your customer is the single most valuable resource that must be developed, nurtured, and cultivated. I’m not saying your people aren’t important, of course not. But we often spend more time nurturing, training and developing the talent than we cultivating the customers that make having people possible.

Habits that drain your energy

Did you know that anxiety is the most common mental illness in the U.S. affecting more than 40 million adults? That’s roughly 1 in 8 people around you. And only 1 in 3 suffering actually receive treatment. It stems from a variety of problems, some very commonplace, such as a slipping grip on the tasks around you, mounding work and a constant feel of playing catch-up.

With 1.2 million terabytes of information at the touch of your fingertips and growing, it’s pretty hard to keep up. There’s never going to be enough time to know it all and be it all. Your only solution: optimise your time. Easily said, difficult to do. But, often the biggest hurdle is the self-created one, stemming from a range of behaviours which we may not even realise we are exhibiting. Here are 11 of the most toxic habits that are killing your time, energy and motivation.

The Best “Hire Me” Email I’ve Seen from a Recent College Grad

I’ve gone through hundreds of resumes and seen a lot of incoming inquiries on the path to building the early team at Engagio, but the most impressive introductory email I’ve seen was from a recent college grad that we hired at Engagio. The purpose of this post is to break down all the things she did right so that recent college grads applying for positions who are hungry enough to read this are able to stand out. Here’s the email:

Can You “Fix” Colleagues Who Aren’t Self-Aware?

Emotional Self-Awareness is one of twelve crucial competencies in my Emotional and Social Leadership Competency Model. Leaders with this skill recognize their own feelings and how those feelings impact the people around them and their job performance. When your boss or colleagues demonstrate Emotional Self-Awareness, they are better able to act with Emotional Self-Control, another crucial EI Competency. That shows up in behavior as a sense of calm, clarity, and open communication.

When colleagues aren’t skilled in Emotional Self-Awareness, they may act like the clueless retail manager.

They may think they’re being “assertive” in expressing themselves while their colleagues experience them as bullies or tyrants.

Why Learning is a Leader’s Most Important Skill

Highly effective, remarkable leaders must be continuous, lifelong learners.

There are at least four reasons why I believe this is true: the complexity of leadership, the nature of change, the role of leaders to model for others and the overall source of leadership.

Let me explain.
