BD4-MG module to produce METHANOL from the crude GLYCEROL

BD4-MG module to produce METHANOL from the crude GLYCEROL

1. Main process description

The raw glycerol from the transesterification reaction of oils is treated with pure hydrogen in order to get these products:

– dry methanol, 90-95% purity

– free fatty acids

– polyglycols

** The % of each product depends on the composition of the glycerol feedstock

** FFA’s and Methanol can be re-used in the same biodiesel manufacturing, and the polyglycols may be sold to the chemical industry, or burnt as fuel .

2. Steps of the process

• load of 500 L (125 gal) of raw glycerol, weight around 600 kg (1200 lb)

• acid neutralization

• FFA’s extraction (+/- 25%), keeping the 80% purified glycerin

• hidrogenolysis of the glycerin under controlled temperature and vacuum

• extraction of the gaseous methanol and water cooled condensing (+/- 40%)

• extraction of the glycols (+/- 35%)

3. Production capacity

The BD4-MG module can process up to 1000 kg (2000 lb) of raw glycerol along of 24 h work.

It will produce around of 400 kg (800 lb) of methanol, 250 kg (500 lb) of FFA’s and 350 kg (700 lb) of glycols.

** See attached the flow chart of the process and the scope included.

The operation can be done by one non skilled people per shift

**  INPUTS:

– raw glycerol

– energy: 70 Wh/kg glicerol

– acid: 1 a 2,5% in volume

– catalizer: 0,01% per kg

– water: 0,4 L/kg
