Not everything Jesus did and say is in the Bible

That is why it is wrong to assume that what God has to say is exclusively found in the Bible. Therefore, we would err to stick to a “Sola Scriptura” or a doctrine that say that the scriptures are the sole source of authority for faith and practice. It is the Truth and the Word of God indeed, and in the last pages of the Gospel of John we read, “But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written (John 21:25).”

Sacred Tradition of which the Word lived and taught by men designated as Temple of the Holy Spirit is that part of the story of Jesus which the world could not contain if it were all written down. So it will be a myopic view of God’s capability and capacity if we tied His Nature as Creator to a single book.

The Bible is just an introduction. A summary. An excerpt of greater things behind of which we cannot grasp all at once if we still fight and debate no end about what God said about Himself. As long as we cannot live its truth and decided to just use it to benefit our mundane need for tithes, love offerings, donations, and money to support our temporal needs hiding behind the veil of religiosity and holiness, men would just be limited to its profound Truth but never growing to a pure worship of the divine. It will all stay within the realm of knowledge and debates on what is right and proper but never matured into wisdom where both the written and the unwritten is creating a path to God. We will all get stucked, fooled and convinced, played with and fearful of the unknown of which some denominational leaders of faith have thoroughly studied and mastered. A carefully planned education how to play the emotions getting its basis from the written version of faith to get more members, and with it, an increase in tithes and money. That is why sons of denominational church leaders have to found another church for themselves to have independent tithes and so on throughout the next generation. So cults increases and the bible exploitation with it. Sometimes Holy Scripture has to be revised and reworded to suit whatever a wolf in sheep clothing, a false prophet, preach his congregation.

Isn’t that a mockery of faith?

Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega. The Beginning and the End. A part of what He has to say or do is not even written yet. He is History, Current Events, and the Future rolled into One. And what is not written is Holy Tradition. So there is really no “Sola Scriptura.” On a light manner, and a bit teasing, we can say that too is not found anywhere in the Bible.

THE ULTIMATE PRAYER BOOK

“This is how you are to pray.” —Matthew 6:9

When we pray the “Our Father,” we are praying part of the Bible (Mt 6:9-13). Consider extending this and make praying the Bible one of your principal Lenten practices. Pray it word for word as far as possible. Just change the words slightly to put them in the form of a prayer. For example, you can pray the end of today’s first reading: “Father, may Your word that goes forth from Your mouth not return to You void but do Your will, achieving the end for which You sent it” (see Is 55:11). Also, try to personalize the prayer. For example, in the above prayer, you may pray: “Father, may Your word to me concerning repentance from unforgiveness not return to You void.”

Sometimes you may not pray the Bible word for word, but it will inspire you to pray for intentions and pray in ways you would have never thought of otherwise. Furthermore, when you pray the Bible, you will be challenged to repent. God’s ways are often not our ways (Is 55:8). We will have to deny ourselves, not do our will, and do God’s will to pray the Bible. Finally, when we pray the Bible, we will see our prayers answered, for we will not be praying in our name but in Jesus’ name (Jn 14:14). Pray the Bible.

Prayer:  Father, this Lent, may the Bible become my prayer book.

Promise:  “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves.” ––Ps 34:19

Praise:  St. Polycarp was instructed directly by the Apostle John. Polycarp, in turn, instructed St. Irenaeus of Lyon. Lord, thank You for our apostolic faith!

Protestant Traditions You Won’t Find in the Bible

Nowadays, it is easy to be discouraged by the scandals and errors of those who serve the church. Un-Catholic ways of priests and laities, their questionable demeanors, and sometime sexual exploitiations. We tend to ask the question “Where is God on that?” We sometime does not want to hear mass at all.

Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ

I interpret as I should, following the command of Christ: Search the Scriptures, and Seek and you shall find. Christ will not say to me what he said to the Jews: You erred, not knowing the Scriptures and not knowing the power of God. For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.

Therefore, I will imitate the head of a household who brings out of his storehouse things both new and old, and says to his spouse in the Song of Songs: I have kept for you things new and old, my beloved. In this way permit me to explain Isaiah, showing that he was not only a prophet, but an evangelist and an apostle as well. For he says about himself and the other evangelists: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news, of those who announce peace. And God speaks to him as if he were an apostle: Whom shall I send, who will go to my people? And he answers: Here I am; send me.

No one should think that I mean to explain the entire subject matter of this great book of Scripture in one brief sermon, since it contains all the mysteries of the Lord. It prophesies that Emmanuel is to be born of a virgin and accomplish marvelous works and signs. It predicts his death, burial and resurrection from the dead as the Savior of all men. I need say nothing about the natural sciences, ethics and logic. Whatever is proper to holy Scripture, whatever can be expressed in human language and understood by the human mind, is contained in the book of Isaiah. Of these mysteries the author himself testifies when he writes: You shall be given a vision of all things, like words in a sealed scroll. When they give the writings to a wise man, they will say: Read this. And he will reply: I cannot, for it is sealed. And when the scroll is given to an uneducated man and he is told: Read this, he will reply: I do not know how to read.

Should this argument appear weak to anyone, let him listen to the Apostle: Let two or three prophets speak, and let others interpret; if, however, a revelation should come to one of those who are seated there, let the first one be quiet. How can they be silent, since it depends on the Spirit who speaks through his prophets whether they remain silent or speak? If they understood what they were saying, all things would be full of wisdom and knowledge. But it was not the air vibrating with the human voice that reached their ears, but rather it was God speaking within the soul of the prophets, just as another prophet says: It is an angel who spoke in me; and again, Crying out in our hearts, Abba, Father, and I shall listen to what the Lord God says within me.
