Farm-Based BioDiesel Manufacturing


A) BACKGROUND

Transesterification (alcoholysis) of vegetable oils means to replace the heavy glycerol for a lighter alcohol. It then results in FATTY ACID ALCOHOL ESTERS, (commonly known as “BIODIESEL”), and crude GLYCEROL.

B) REACTOR DESCRIPTION

The BD2 reactor is a single stainless steel vessel, pressurized, electrically heated and isolated batch unit, capable of either base, or base/base processes for transesterifying any vegetable oil, virgin or wasted one, with up to 7% acidity.

The vessel processes 63.5 gallon (240 liters) of vegetable oil/alcohol mix, delivering on average 53 gallon (200 liters) of Biodiesel and 10.5 gallon (40 liters) of glycerol, per batch, in approximately 11 hours.

The plant is skid mounted, self-contained, and can be powered by either 380V/50hz or 480 V/60hz; other voltages are available.

Oilless compressed air (10 psi) is provided by an innovative SA-T pendular oilless compressor.

Vegetable oil and alcohol are pumped through ball valves and visual level. The alkaline catalyst is pre-measured and then added to the alcohol. Proportions can be modified by the operator to fit different feedstocks. The strong and fast mixing is performed by one on-line mixer and two pumps.

Operator pre-set  temperature and pressure values are kept automatically. Instruments, lights, fail-safe visual and sound alarms are incorporated into the control panel.

A pressure relief valve and a vent manifold allow outside venting to a service line, complying with both ambient and work safety requirements.

Metal bodied, spherical valves, are used throughout.

C) BRIEF BD2 MODULE’s PROCESS DESCRIPTION

The minimum M4 module includes one BD2-D flash dryer and one BD2 processor.

The dryer has identical body, assembly and size than the reactor, but includes one venturi type vacuum pump on top.

The previously well settled, cleaned and filtered oil, is pumped into the dryer, which heats and dehydrate it by boiling the bonded water at relative low temperature under limited vacuum.

At the BD2 processor, the alcohol is pumped into the vessel and the mixing starts with the vent valve opened. The catalyst is first pre-measured by titration of the feedstock, and then poured into the vessel to mix.

The hot vegetable oil is then pumped from the BD2-D dryer into the reactor; the reactor’s pipe heaters (belt type) turned on, and finally the vent valve closed.

The mixing continues under selected conditions of temperature and pressure during a stated period. Once finished, the mixture settles under pressure, until the separation of the glycerol and the liquid alcoholester occurs.

The resulting glycerol is first extracted applying air pressure, and the remaining Biodiesel is pushed through a 5 microns filter before being stored.

* Total period process is around 11 h, then 2 batches per day can be done in the BD2 reactor

* More production can be reached by adding external pressurized settling tanks

-The methylester produced can reach the ASTM and EN 14214 standards.

Some additional explanations

1.

Highly experienced mill operator can extract oil without cooking from rape seeds, cottonseed, sesame, sunflower, copra etc. For Groundnut, Palm kernel, Castor seed, cooking is essential.

2.

Refining of oil is not required. Filtered oil is best for health. Filter oil has minimum 18 months shelf life. However, cottonseed oil requires refining or at least neutralization.

3.

Castor seed oil requires steam heating in a neutralizer vessel before filtration.

4.

For palm fruits, our conventional expeller will not be useful. SPECIAL KIND OF EXPELLER WITH DIFFERENT DESIGN IS PROVIDED FOR PALM FRUITS and such expeller specifically for palm fruits is not useful for any other oilseeds.

Function of Machinery

1.

Cracker breaks the sunflower/castor/copra/groundnut  seeds and gives the mixture of kernels & husks for crushing. Runs on 4 H.P. Motor. (Not included).

2.

Cooking kettle heats and cooks the kernels or oilseeds by electricity. A little spray water is also added to the oilseeds to increase moisture content to optimum level. Kettle is mounted on the expeller and is driven from expeller motor.

3.

Expeller crushes oilseeds producing oil and oil cake.

4.

 Filtered oil is completely pure and fresh natural edible oil.

Neutralizer (optional) removes free fatty acids from cottonseed oil by adding caustic soda (lye). It is driven by 1 H.P. Motor. Castor oil also can be heated into neutralizer by steam coils inside the neutralizer.

The First Farmer Who Produced His Own Diesel Fuel


BIODIESEL: first farmer that produces his own diesel fuel

Since April 2003, Dr Thomas Hernandorena, an argentine farmer from Coronel Suarez (Buenos Aires state) has become the pioneer of the integrated biofuel production. From the sunflower oil seeds to the tractor and harvester machine’s fuel tank.

As per the last available information, this one is the first integrated renewable fuel installation in the world.

The know how, basic engineering and all the equipment were supplied on 2002 by ABATEC S.A., an argentine company too.

The production package includes two steps :

– oilseeds crushing to obtain rich expeller and pure filtered oil

– processing this virgin oil by using one BIO2 pressurized reactor, to get biodiesel and valuable glycerol.

The crushing step includes a 2HP sunflower cracker, one rugged Tinytech screw press with 10HP motor for 3000 kg/day of seeds, and one press filter with 12 plates for maximum purification of the oil.

Is important to point out that this sunflower oil, obtained by first pressing, is ready to be used as edible oil. At present, the farmer is getting a 40% of oil extraction from his seeds.

The simultaneously produced sunflower cake has around 10% of remaining oil into it, and is used with big success to feed the cattle of the farm in winter, when lack of green grass.

The biodiesel step is made with a pressurized reactor for 400 L/day in two batches of 200 liter. He uses lye as catalizer and industrial grade methanol for the alcoholisis. He also gets 80 liter/day of high quality glycerol.

The fuel flows through the 5 micron filter of the BIO2, and is stored in plastic drums. Its first 100% use is for feeding the diesel generating set that supports all the farm. It runs smoothly and w/o any gases pollution. The biodiesel is also the only fuel for farm machines, truck, pickup and the farmer’s family cars.

The filtered glycerol is also used as a biodegradable detergent on buidings and as liquid soap for hands and skin.

This farmer noted that by using a 3% of the collected seeds to make biodiesel fuel, this quantity results enough to cultivate the 100% of his land during the year round. Of course, this will depend on the crop’s yield at each zone.

With the small integrated plant, which cost is similar to the one modern light truck, and needs 60m2 of space only, this farmer can for the first time in history, to decide when and what to do with his production. He has now seeds, cake, oil , glycerol and biodiesel. All them products with high added value.

We hope his example can be followed by several small farmers all around the world.
